CloudArray will be offered in new software models used for both virtual appliances and Dell PowerEdge R730xd servers beginning on February 13, 2017

All configurations must start with the Base Solution of 3TB cache. Customers are then able to increase their cache capacity in 1TB increments. If later on, after the initial purchase, customers wish to increase their CloudArray software license, they can do this in 1TB increments with the upgrade license. This allows for much more granular sizing to fit every customer environment and budget.

The new Dell servers offer over 20 times the IOPS performance of the old hardware appliances thanks to being all-flash. Combined with these new software models, this offering is the fastest and most flexible to date.

According to a recent Dell survey, 97% of organizations are not ready for the new European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) due to come into force in May 2018. Read in the latest Dell EMC blog why it is high time for Service Providers to offer Privacy-as-a-Service.

Effective January 7th, 2017, Dell EMC will End-of-Life (EOL) the RecoverPoint Generation 5 (Gen5) appliance. End of service life (EOSL) is scheduled for 01/07/2020. Customers can take advantage of the latest Gen6 hardware with 60% greater processing power and an optional 10GbE communication module.

Changes have already been made in the RecoverPoint ordering path in MyQuotes to remove the Gen5 option by 01/07/2017.

With close to 30,000 units deployed worldwide, Dell EMC RecoverPoint is the leading data protection and disaster recovery solution. In April 2016, Dell EMC introduced the latest Gen 6 hardware.

The new Gen 6 hardware has rapidly increased in volume since its introduction and now accounts for more than 90% of RecoverPoint appliance shipments. This brings us to the logical step of discontinuing the old Gen 5 hardware. Please refer to the Gen 6 FAQ document for more information.

Service and Support

Dell EMC Global Services will provide 3 years of software support to current Gen 5 customers starting on the EOL date, which ends January 7th, 2020.

Current Gen 5 customers can easily upgrade to Gen 6 hardware. The RecoverPoint ordering path in MyQuotes allows you to order upgrades to Gen 6 hardware.

On September 15, 2016 Dell EMC will announce the release of a new offering, Dell EMC ScaleIO Ready Node. The ScaleIO Ready Node, which became generally available on September 8, 2016, combines ScaleIO software with Dell PowerEdge servers, which have been tuned, optimized, tested and validated to run ScaleIO.

ScaleIO Ready Node is among the first offerings being brought to market by the Dell EMC brand of Dell Technologies. It combines the industry leading hardware of Dell PowerEdge servers, with the software-defined block storage software of ScaleIO.

There are 18 configurations customers can select from, including All-Flash and Hybrid models in 2U1N and 1U1N configurations. The All-Flash configurations are configured to meet the demands of mission-critical enterprise workloads, delivering high levels of performance, capacity and cost efficiency. There are a variety of configurations designed to support storage-only and hyper-converged deployment models, providing customers with the choices needed to map to how they run their business.

The ScaleIO Ready Node is the combination of leading hardware and software solutions in, what promises to be, one of the best SDS offerings on the market. We are able to offer our customers a single solution (hardware and software developed and maintained by one company); a single buying cycle for server SANs; and a single place for support.

Key Features:

Next Generation Hardware

  • Based on 13th Generation Dell PowerEdge servers
  • Utilizing the latest generation Intel Processors
  • Specifically tuned and optimized for ScaleIO

All-Flash Configurations

  • High-density and High-Capacity All-Flash configurations

Enhanced Caching Layer

  • Full integration with SanDisk® DAS Cache®

Operating System Flexibility

  • Tested and supported for use with ESX, Linux and Windows Server (Hyper-V)

World Class Support

  • A single support model for both the hardware and software from a single vendor

The ScaleIO software can still be consumed in 3 different ways:

  • ScaleIO software empowers customers to turn their x86 servers into server SANs to create a Software Defined Storage infrastructure.
  • ScaleIO Ready Nodes combines ScaleIO software with Dell PowerEdge servers, which have been optimized to run ScaleIO software, greatly simplifying the process of procuring and deploying a server SAN. Customers can have confidence in building a new architecture or transforming their existing infrastructure to a Modern Data Center knowing that the ScaleIO Ready Node is fully supported, pre-validated, tested and configured to provide the best performance possible.
  • VCE™VxRack™System with FLEX integrates compute, software-defined storage, networking, and virtualization. It then utilizes ScaleIO software, and VCE Vision™Intelligent Operations software, to create a turnkey, hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) solution that is fully supported and sustained.

Today’s IT infrastructures are siloed, inflexible and rigid. IT organizations are looking to move away from these complex and siloed environments which are plagued by inefficient planning, high costs and longer time-to-market. They are looking to modernize their data centers with software-defined storage.

Modernizing the data center starts with removing IT’s dependency on traditional SAN hardware and instead, transforming the data center with Software-defined Storage. Dell EMC ScaleIO Ready Node brings together next generation, rack-optimized, Dell PowerEdge servers with ScaleIO, the most agile, scalable and performant Software-Defined Storage (SDS) solution for block storage. It fits within the existing infrastructure and is the perfect choice for organizations looking for ways to reduce the time needed to plan and deploy a new architecture. Having the software and hardware from a single vendor, delivering single support, greatly simplifies the process of procuring and deploying a server SAN. Also the ability to select from different deployment models (storage-only / hyper-converged) and configurations, including All-Flash and Hybrid, provide businesses with the flexibility to select the solution that best meets their business objectives.

ScaleIO Ready Node delivers a powerful, flexible and agile server SAN solution that supports specific workload demands while also helping to reduce risk and maximize TCO. It not only eliminates data migrations, forklift upgrades, expensive Fibre Channel connectivity and “Islands of SANs” but also delivers:

  • Compelling Economics: Attain as much as 50% more efficiency (power/cooling/space) when compared to traditional SAN infrastructures and bring the power of All-Flash to SDS deployments without sacrificing cost efficiency.
  • Massive Scalability: Achieve web scale from the core data center by while truly eliminating silos of infrastructure from the data center. Clusters can scale from as little as 3 nodes and as much as to 1000+ nodes across multiple racks.
  • Supreme Elasticity: Storage and compute resources can be increased or decreased in small or large increments whenever the need arises “on the fly” with no downtime. IT organizations add only what they need when they need it.
  • Extreme Performance: Experience performance that scales linearly. Tested against multiple traditional SAN vendor models, customers can achieve as much as 8x better IOPS performance. All-Flash configurations provide greater performance with lower latency.
  • Unparalleled Flexibility: Choose the OS/hypervisor running on each server node. Customers can select the configurations which best support workloads and be empowered to build the solution that best fits their application and business needs.

EMC Unity Appliances

Unity is off to a great start and is setting the market on fire. Since its GA in May, the Unity transition far exceeds the VNX2 transition (from VNX1 for the same time period). In addition, we have seen close to 20,000 Unity systems quoted, with great interest in both the All-Flash and Hybrid configurations across a wide range of use cases. And we have seen more than 3,000 UnityVSA downloads, with over 50% activation rate, providing users with a software-defined entry point and an on-ramp to a future purpose-built Unity appliance sale.

Announcement Overview
Innovation is key, and the Unity team is delivering on that by:

  •  Offering new RAID 6 (14+2) ordering options through MyQuotes
  •  Enabling upgrades in MyQuotes for both All-Flash and Hybrid configurations
  • Introducing support for new higher capacity flash drives – 3.84TB and 7.68TB SSD
  •  Providing support for AppSync Basic and AppSync Advanced
  •  Price changes align net prices between Unity All-Flash and Unity Hybrid

Announcement Details

  1. New Drives: Introducing support for 3.84TB and 7.68TB SSD to be used only in Unity All-Flash arrays. This presents a huge 2.5x improvement in density. Previously Unity supported 80TB in 2Us (i.e. 25x 3.2TB drives); now Unity All-Flash will support 192TBs in 2Us. These new drives will be in MyQuotes starting on August 13 and will only be supported in their own all-flash pools in Unity All-Flash arrays. In Unisphere, these new flash drives will present themselves as “SAS Flash 4” – you cannot mix SAS Flash 3 and SAS Flash 4 drives in the same pool.

These new flash drive options allow for more flexibility and improved density.

  2. Unity Upgrades: Many Unity customers are starting to ask for capacity upgrades. Today many RFP’s require that you add in upgrade costs into your initial RFP submission. Up to now, this has been a manual process requiring corporate involvement. As of August 13, the ability to quote Unity upgrades for All-Flash and Hybrid configurations will be included in MyQuotes.

We’ve simplified the upgrade process. It is now included in MyQuotes.

  3. RAID 6: As of the July MyQuotes release, RAID 6 (14+2) has been included as an option in the Unity Sizer Tool.

More flexible RAID options. Better protection and less impactful rebuild times with RAID 6.

  4. AppSync: As of the July MyQuotes release, AppSync Basic is provided at no additional charge with all Unity systems. AppSync Advanced is also supported and available for order in MyQuotes as optional software.

AppSync provides for a modern single-click application consistent snapshot for more advanced and specific application protection capabilities.

  5. Pricing Alignment: July price changes align net prices between Unity All-Flash and Unity Hybrid.

List prices on Unity All-Flash will be reduced to balance the reduction of Early Adopter Promo. Net Street Price will remain flat from Q2 to Q3.

List prices on Unity Hybrid all-flash pool drives will be changed to align to the new Unity All-Flash drive list prices (Early Adopter Promotion will now automatically apply to all-flash pool drives across both Hybrid and All-Flash configurations).

Note: The new Unity software release (Unity OE v4.0.1) which includes support for the new drives and minor bug fixes for improved quality, and is required for the new flash drive support, will be posted for download on August, 16 and will GA from manufacturing on August 29.
